The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued another recall for Hasbro Easy-Bake Oven's. The ovens pose a burn injury hazard because young children can get their hands stuck in the front opening. There have been hundreds of reports of children getting their hands stuck, with injuries including second and third degree burns and the partial amputation of a finger.

Hasbro recalled the ovens in February, but issued a kit to try to repair the problem rather than conducting a full recall (presumably to save money). Go to the CPSC recall site for additional information. With all due respect, this would seem like such an obvious potential danger that Hasbro would have conducted tests to make sure that little hands couldn't get stuck in the oven. Now, because it didn't spend the money and the time to conduct proper testing at the beginning, hundreds of children have been needlessly injured and Hasbro has to bear the expense of recalling the 1 million units that are out there. The expression "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" comes to mind.

Safety tip -- For every toy you buy for (or is given to) your child, examine it carefully before giving it to him or her. Look for things like choking hazards, sharp edges and "pinch points" where fingers or hands can get stuck. If you find a problem, obviously don't let your child play with it, but also report the problem to the CPSC. This is very important, because the only way a dangerous toy gets recalled is if enough complaints are received. And don't just report it to the manufacturer, as some unscrupulous companies have been known to either not respond to or keep track of complaints about their dangerous and defective products.
