Maytag is issuing a recall this week for approximately 1.6 million refrigerators sold from January 2001 thorugh January 2004 at department, applicance, home builder stores. Affected models include Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Maytag, Performa, and Crosley side-by-sides and top freezer refrigerators.

Electrical failures are the cause of the defect. A component that activates the compressor may cause overheating and a resulting serious fire hazard. There are 16 reported incidents involving smoke damage all the way up to major kitchen fires.

If you believe you own one of these defective refrigerators, you may set up a free home repair at 866-533-9817, or contact www.repair.maytag.com . You should get your affected refrigerator repaired as soon as possible, in light of the fire hazard to your property, including your home. There were no reported injuries or deaths at this time.
