Ford Recalls 1.1 Million More Vehicles

Ford Motor Company is recalling 1.1 million more vehicles. This time, Ford is recalling more than 1.1 million heavy-duty trucks with diesel engines because of a problem that could lead to engine stalling. When an engine stalls, particularly when the vehicle is moving, this may present a safety problem for the driver and occupants because the driver may lose control of the vehicle. Ford's position, however, is that the vehicle remains controllable, despite the fact that Ford voluntarily agreed, after NHTSA investigated the claims, to the safety recall. Of the 821 complaints investigated, 9 alleged crashes or fires. The recall affects 1997-2003 model E-series, Excursion, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks equipped with 7.3 litre diesel engines.

Ford attibutes the problem to "sensor circuit degradation" because of "manufacturing variability" along with the sensor design. Ford is scheduled to begin notifying owners of the problem on December 17, 2007, and complete the recall in phases by May 2008.
